The Walkstation - The Future of Fitness in the Office

The prospect of burning calories whilst you work is near at hand and available to try in the UK for the first time at Steelcase's WorkLife centre, Farringdon Road.

Steelcase's UK headquarters are now in possession of the much anticipated Walkstation, an innovative product designed to battle office related health issues and create a healthier workforce, and it is now available for people to view and try for themselves.

There are astonishing benefits a product of this quality can bring to the workforce, with office workers exercising and burning off calories while they work. Dr Levine at the Mayo Clinic realised the significant health implications from a sedentary workforce and the benefits of workers if they are physically active during their normal desk-based activities. Steelcase used this information to find a way that would combat these concerns.

Steelcase in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic in the United States pioneered the idea of the Walkstation concept and it has provoked much interest. Even walking at 1mph whilst working has the potential of increase energy expenditure by 100 calories per hour. A pleasing fact to the ear of those wanting that extra biscuit!
The Walkstation is designed to make the transition from being seated at work to standing and walking on the Walkstation simple and hassle free, so as not to disturb productivity. The Walkstation is height adjustable with a specially designed commercial grade treadmill enabling people to walk slowly while working on a computer.

A UK Government report revealed last year on the Health Profile of England that the UK is a nation blighted by record levels of obesity which is driving the cost of healthcare and driving down workers productivity. The Walkstation is designed to encourage more movement and help alleviate some of these problems.
