Steelcase environmental credentials on show Steelcase has landed outstanding collaborations at two of the most popular exhibitions of the Spring, Eco-build and The Ideal Home Show, based on their industry leading environmental credentials. Steelcase teamed up with Satellite Architects and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage to provide the furniture for the River Cottage Canteen at this years Eco-build conference, Europe’s largest exhibition in sustainable design and construction. Satellite Architect chose to use Steelcase products because of their strong eco-friendly credentials, and felt that the product design and company ethos would be a perfect match with River Cottage. Steelcase provided the Canteen with the B Free Lounge and Westside chairs. The Westside chair is 97% recyclable and designed to be made with minimal waste, energy consumption and environmental impact. Similarly the different components of the B Free lounge, the beam, high table and cube are all at least 90% recyclable by weight and have been designed to use the minimum possible number of materials. The exhibition was a huge success and saw over 20,000 visitors and 500 exhibitors over the course of three days. Riding on the same environmental theme, the much anticipated and highly popular Ideal Home show took place this March celebrating over 100 years of innovation and inspiration in the home and garden. The Eco House is becoming a central feature at the Ideal Home show and attempts to highlight the importance of future environmentally friendly living and house design and construction. Steelcase’s award winning ‘Think’ chair and Kalidro work station were selected to feature inside the house as a perfect demonstration of these core values. The futuristic house, designed by renowned architect John Prewer, presents eye catching and pragmatic solutions created to solve issues such as climate change, diminishing fossil fuels and adapting life styles and building regulations and proved to be a popular attraction amongst visitors. The Steelcase Think chair became the first office furniture product to receive McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry’s (MBDC) Cradle to Cradle Product Certification, a certificate that recognises the use of ecologically intelligent materials. The Kaildro was also another obvious choice to put in the Eco House being made from 34% recycled materials and which is 99% recyclable. |
