STEELCASE JOINS ECO-FRIENDLY FORCES WITH GREEN-WORKS

Steelcase has formed a partnership in the UK with Green-Works, the not-for-profit social enterprise which provides redundant office furniture for re-use by schools, charities and community organisations.

Steelcase supports Green-Works’ policy of zero landfill throughout the UK and wholly endorses the charity’s take-back initiatives which sees old furniture removed from offices and re-distributed.

Mark Spragg, Managing Director of Steelcase UK, said: “Green-Works provide a fantastic service which allows organisations to deal with their old office furniture in a socially and environmentally responsible way. We hope to promote this service to customers all across the UK through our network of dealers, our sales staff and the rest of the Steelcase team.”

“This venture really could not be more worthwhile and fits perfectly with Steelcase’s established sustainability strategy. Steelcase were the forerunners in the application of life-cycle thinking in the office furniture industry, which aims to reduce the impact of products on the environment from the initial stages of research design until their end-of-life. This partnership demonstrates our cradle-to-cradle commitment.”

Green-Works aims to change the way that society thinks about waste. Since its first operation was set up in 2002, it has enlisted nearly one hundred members, including BP, Barclays Bank Plc, Unilever and DEFRA, to pass on redundant office furniture for re-use.

By re-distributing intact pieces of furniture and remodelling damaged or worn items at their in-house joinery, Green-Works pursues a zero landfill policy.

Mike Lee, Sales & Marketing Director from Green-works, added: “This is a first for both Green-Works and Steelcase. Our goal is to encourage as many businesses as possible to subscribe to take-back schemes. As the world’s leading office workspace and furniture designer Steelcase will really help us to extend our reach. ”
